Family and multigenerational vacations are on the rise in Amsterdam and across the Netherlands. At Sapiens Travel DMC, our team has put together a selection of eight top activities for parents and children alike.
Efteling Park
Our favorite suggestion for children of 4 years old. Looking for exciting rollercoasters, enchanting attractions or spectacular shows? Everyone will find what they are looking for in Efteling Theme Park. Opened in 1952, it is one of the most extraordinary theme parks in Europe and takes families on a magical journey. Located approximately 1h from Amsterdam by car. The Attractions are based on the parks fantasy theme, with some attractions based on elements from the fairy tales, folklore, fable, and myths and legends.
for curious children: nemo
An interactive science and technology museum perfect for awakening the curiosity in young minds. Kids are invited to dive into hands-on experiments and explore intriguing exhibits designed to blend education and fun seamlessly. And their rooftop is awesome for a quick top for a coffee and indulge some snacks, with great panoramic views from Amsterdam.
The National Maritime Museum: for the little sailors inside us
The rich history of Dutch maritime culture is showcased at its best in this impressive museum. With its interactive exhibits, hands-on activities, and captivating storytelling, children are transported into the fascinating world of maritime history and exploration. From life-sized ship replicas that kids can climb aboard and explore to engaging workshops that let them experience life as a sailor, the museum creates an immersive environment where learning becomes an exciting adventure.
our favorite STOP in HAGUE: MADURODAM
The world's largest miniature city, visitors can uncover the wonders of the Netherlands in an utterly unique way. The intricacy and detail of the scaled replicas of esteemed Dutch landmarks are truly captivating, leaving both young and mature explorers spellbound. And since you are in The Hague, make a stop in Legoland, a place where imagination takes physical form. With a vast array of attractions and interactive experiences, it offers an engaging playground for the whole family. Great activity to combine with Madurodam. See our suggestion of full day tour in The Hague for kids here.
dutch children's favorite activity: city farms
While you are in Amsterdam, children may love to visit one of the petting farms, famously called "Kinderboerderij"in dutch. A Kinderboerderij is a special type of petting zoo or farm in the Netherlands that is specifically designed for children. These farms aim to provide a hands-on educational experience for kids, where they can interact with various farm animals in a safe and controlled environment. Children have the opportunity to feed, pet, and sometimes even help care for the animals, which can include goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens, pigs, and more.
face to face with animals of all sizes: ARTIS ZOO & MICROPIA EXPOSITION
At Artis Zoo, young explorers can immerse themselves in a world of diverse wildlife from all corners of the globe. From majestic elephants, playful penguins, and graceful giraffes, the zoo has over 700 different species of animals to not only engage the children, but also to foster a deeper appreciation for nature and conservation. Additionally, the zoo's interactive exhibits provide ample opportunities for kids to learn about animal behavior and habitats in an engaging manner.
Right at the same building, there is also Micropia, the world's first museum dedicated to microorganisms. Here, children can embark on a fascinating journey into the microscopic universe, discovering the hidden world of bacteria, fungi, and other tiny organisms. Through interactive displays and hands-on experiences, they gain insight into the critical role these microorganisms play in our lives, promoting a sense of wonder and scientific curiosity.

Kröller-Müller Museum: The perfect mix of art & nature
Tucked inside De Hoge Veluwe National Park, the Kröller-Müller Museum is a dream for families, only 1h drive from Amsterdam. Kids can hop on free White Bicycles (with child seats!) to explore the park’s scenic trails, spotting deer and wild boar along the way. The museum’s sculpture garden invites little ones to roam freely, while the underground Museonder and interactive treasure hunts make art and nature fun and accessible. A perfect blend of culture and adventure.

Paint Like Van Gogh – A Colorful Family Adventure in Amsterdam
Calling all young artists! Take a fun break from sightseeing and step into the world of Vincent Van Gogh during a private painting workshop designed for curious kids (and their grown-ups!). Led by a local artist in her cozy studio in the charming Jordaan neighborhood, this 2.5-hour session lets you learn how to paint like Van Gogh — bold brushstrokes, bright colors, and all. No need to be a pro — just bring your imagination! By the end of the session, you'll leave with your very own Van Gogh-inspired painting to take home — a special memory of your family’s time in Amsterdam. A fun, hands-on way to connect with Dutch culture through art!

A Walk Through the Body: Discover CORPUS with Your Kids
The CORPUS Museum in the Netherlands takes kids on a wild journey inside the human body — quite literally. Starting at the knee and ending at the brain, children walk through giant organs, learn how the heart pumps, and discover what happens to their food after lunch. With interactive games, sounds, and larger-than-life exhibits, it’s both educational and exciting — perfect for curious minds who love science, anatomy, or just a bit of gross fun. Only a 40-minute drive from Amsterdam.
