From May 2023 to March 2026, the MSK (Museum of Fine Arts Ghent) offers a rare opportunity to witness the meticulous restoration of one of the world's most revered masterpieces: the Ghent Altarpiece, also known as The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. This legendary work, painted by the Van Eyck brothers in the early 15th century, has captivated art lovers for centuries and continues to reveal new layers of history, artistry, and meaning.
Now, as part of a multi-phase restoration project, the upper panels of this monumental artwork are being restored live at MSK—a rare chance to observe the painstaking care that goes into preserving such a monumental treasure.
A Masterpiece Under Restoration
The Ghent Altarpiece is a polyptych of monumental significance, housed in St. Bavo’s Cathedral. Its history is as rich as its intricate details: over the centuries, it has endured theft, war, and even a controversial overpainting. The restoration aims to remove layers of overpainting, varnish, and other alterations made over centuries, revealing the original, intricate details and vibrant colors beneath.

The ongoing restoration project began in 2012 and is now entering its third and final phase, focusing on the upper five panels, which depict a divine Deësis arrangement: God enthroned, flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist, alongside angelic musicians and the iconic figures of Adam and Eve.
This restoration is being executed by the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA), one of the world's foremost conservation organizations. Visitors to the MSK can observe restorers working behind glass, allowing an intimate view of the complex process. You’ll see how scientists and art historians utilize cutting-edge technology, like the macro-XRF scanner, to delve beneath the surface and examine the original paint layers.
Key Highlights of the Restoration Process
Restored Panels: In the first two phases, the exterior panels and five lower panels of the altarpiece were meticulously restored and returned to St. Bavo’s Cathedral in 2019. These can still be viewed in the cathedral’s visitor center.
Focus of the Current Phase: The five upper panels are currently the focus, including the central Deësis scene and the figures of Adam and Eve. Unique challenges in this phase include restoring delicate brocade imitations in tin relief and complex polychromies on silver and gold.
Cutting-Edge Technology: From the analysis of microscopic paint samples to advanced scanning technology, the restoration is a blend of art and science, shedding light on centuries-old techniques and hidden details.

Why the Ghent Altarpiece is So Important
The Ghent Altarpiece is a monumental work in the history of art, not only for its sheer size and complexity but also for its role as a turning point in Western painting. Painted in the naturalistic style of the Northern Renaissance, it was revolutionary for its use of light, texture, and perspective. The Van Eyck brothers, particularly Jan van Eyck, are credited with perfecting oil painting techniques, which allowed for the deep, lustrous colors and fine detail that continue to astound viewers today.
The subject matter of the altarpiece is equally profound. It presents a theological vision of redemption, with the central panel featuring the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, symbolizing Christ’s sacrifice for humanity. The intricacy of the theological symbolism combined with the revolutionary artistic techniques has made this work one of the most studied and admired pieces in art history.
Beyond its artistic and religious significance, the Ghent Altarpiece also became famous for its dramatic wartime history. During World War II, the altarpiece was targeted by the Nazis and narrowly escaped destruction. Its rescue was famously depicted in the film The Monuments Men, starring George Clooney, which brought attention to the efforts of art historians and museum curators to save Europe’s cultural heritage. The film emphasized the altarpiece’s status as one of the most important artworks ever created, enhancing its global recognition and legacy.
