SAIL Amsterdam 2025: A Celebration of the Sea Like No Other

Every now and then, a city throws a party so big, so unexpected in scale, it spills from the land into the water. Amsterdam does just that with SAIL. Held only once every five years, SAIL Amsterdam is not just a festival. It’s a full-blown maritime takeover. From 20 to 24 August 2025, the city will welcome a fleet of tall ships, naval vessels, and heritage boats from across the globe. They glide into the IJ harbor in a stately parade, then remain for five days—transforming the city’s waterfront into a living museum and celebration of Dutch seafaring culture. It’s a spectacle not just to see, but to experience from within.

We’ve long believed that timing is one of the most underrated aspects of travel design. SAIL is the kind of event where timing does all the heavy lifting: its rarity, its short window, its synchronicity with Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary and SAIL’s own 50-year milestone. You can’t plan for a better moment to be in the city.

What Makes SAIL So Special?

Amsterdam is a city born from water. Its Golden Age wealth came not from land but from trade, powered by wind and wood. SAIL pays tribute to that legacy—through pageantry, sure, but also through human connection. Crews from all over the world open their ships to visitors. Conversations float between cultures. Music and laughter rise from the quays. It’s not a passive event. It’s immersive by design.

But what truly stands out is its accessibility. You don’t need to hold a ticket to enjoy it. Much of SAIL is free to explore—dockside performances, ship visits, exhibitions along the water, and night-time firework displays. And yet, with the right vantage point or the right experience layered in, it becomes something unforgettable.

When and What to Expect

Dates: 20–24 August 2025

Location: IJ River and surrounding waterfronts, Amsterdam North and Central

The event opens with the iconic SAIL-In Parade—hundreds of ships gliding into the city in formation. It’s best seen from the water (ideally on a private or semi-private boat), though bridge crossings and waterfront cafés provide decent alternatives.

Once docked, ships are open for visits. Many offer hosted tours—some historic, others interactive. There’s programming throughout: live music, food markets, pop-up exhibitions, and a range of family-friendly zones. In the evening, the harbor becomes a stage: light installations, performances, and fireworks paint the water in color.

The event closes with the SAIL-Out, just as beautiful and a touch more emotional—crews waving goodbye from the decks as they return to sea.

Making the Most of the event

Amsterdam, during SAIL, isn’t the Amsterdam of quiet canals and early morning museum visits. It’s vibrant, energetic, celebratory. But it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

Here’s how we recommend experiencing it:

  • Choose your base wisely: Waterfront hotels are coveted, but not essential. Even a short walk or ferry ride away offers tranquility and quick access.

  • Book boats early: The best experiences are afloat. Think private dinner cruises during the fireworks, or a spot on a SAIL-In brunch cruise.

  • Layer in cultural context: Maritime museums, a walk through the old VOC shipyard area, or a visit to the Scheepvaartmuseum offer depth before or after the event.

  • Go behind the scenes: Some ships offer VIP tours with the captain or crew, which can be arranged in advance. These are rare and feel deeply personal.

  • Layer in cultural context: A visit to the National Maritime Museum, just steps from the harbor, provides rich historical grounding before diving into the festivities
